Why this snapshot matters

The latest UK hiring snapshot shows a much broader market than traditional ETRM consulting alone. The strongest demand now sits across five connected areas: ETRM and CTRM platforms; energy and commodities trading technology; data engineering and market data; architecture and integration; and business analysis, product and transformation.

The most important market signal is that ETRM is becoming part of a larger trading-data and technology ecosystem. Employers are no longer hiring only people who understand trade capture, settlements or one vendor platform. They increasingly need professionals who can connect trading-domain knowledge with data architecture, APIs, event-driven systems, cloud platforms, market data, analytics and enterprise integration.

1. London remains the centre of the UK market

London overwhelmingly dominates the supplied vacancies. Major secondary locations include Belfast, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Bournemouth, Manchester, Nottingham, Aberdeen, Perth and Solihull.

Belfast is becoming particularly visible for data roles, capital-markets technology, trade management, Calypso, analytics and data services. But for pure ETRM, commodities technology, trading architecture and front-office roles, London remains the primary UK hub.

2. Direct energy and commodity employers are hiring

The dataset contains a substantial group of direct energy, commodity and trading employers, not just consultancies:

This indicates a mature market where employers need people capable of owning complete technology domains rather than individual applications. The senior ETRM professional increasingly sits between trading, risk, operations, data, engineering, architecture, product and management.

4. Endur remains the strongest ETRM vendor skill

Openlink Endur continues to appear repeatedly: Technology Architect, Technology Specialist, Senior Business Analyst, Lead Business Analyst, Trading Business Analyst, Project Manager, and functional, technical and principal consultant roles.

Visible compensation signals include Endur Project Manager at GBP 130K-160K plus bonus, Endur business and technical consulting at GBP 100K-160K, and Openlink Endur contract work at GBP 700-1,400 per day. Endur remains one of the clearest specialist premiums in UK trading technology.

5. But ETRM is bigger than Endur

Other trading platforms continue to appear across the sample: Allegro (business analysis and technical managing consultant roles), Aligne (functional architect), Murex (back office BA, test engineering), Calypso (business analysis, senior development) and SimCorp (solutions architecture across portfolio management, trading, operations, accounting and compliance).

This points toward a clear career strategy: build portable trading-domain knowledge first, then add platform specialisation.

6. The biggest new signal: energy trading data engineering

There is now visible hiring specifically at the intersection of energy trading and data engineering:

8. Event-driven architecture is emerging as a major skill

Several vacancies explicitly reference event-driven technology: C# and SQL event-driven systems for commodities and energy; C#/.NET event-driven modernisation of ETRM front-office data; and full-stack engineering covering API integration and front-office automation.

The shift is from a traditional architecture - ETRM database, batch interfaces, overnight risk, data warehouse - toward trade event, messaging and streaming, domain services, real-time position, risk and P&L, lakehouse and analytics APIs.

That creates opportunities for engineers who understand Kafka-style architectures, messaging, APIs, microservices, data contracts, event sourcing, streaming and distributed systems, combined with trading-domain knowledge.

9. Market data has become a career specialisation

Market data roles appear throughout: integration lead, market data manager, market data engineer, trader marks and market data platform engineer, enterprise data product manager, and risk and performance ready data roles.

Market data is central because virtually every downstream ETRM calculation depends on it - forward curves, spot prices, FX, interest rates, volatility, indexes, trader marks, broker quotes and exchange prices.

A modern architect must understand not just how to ingest market data, but how to make it point-in-time reproducible, versioned, governed, auditable, reconciled and available to downstream valuation engines.

10. Front-office engineering is expanding

The sample reveals a significant front-office technology market: C#/.NET front office developers in global energy trading, front office software engineers in commodities and energy, front office business analysts, trader marks and market data engineers, quantitative developers, a senior quantitative analyst at EDF Trading, a core strategist at Vitol and a trading meteorologist at ExxonMobil.

The technology stack is moving closer to trading decision-making, combining market data, trading analytics, pricing, position management, P&L, weather, forecasting, execution and risk.

11. Business analyst demand remains strong

Business analysis continues to be a major career route, spanning senior BA roles at bp, Endur trading business analysts, front office and technical BAs, business systems analysts in metals trading, and Calypso and Murex BAs.

A particularly notable rate is an energy trading BA covering gas and power at GBP 900 per day inside IR35 - an illustration of how valuable a strong combination of trading-domain and change-delivery expertise can become.

12. Commodity knowledge continues to matter

Several roles explicitly require commodity-domain knowledge: senior crude oil operations at Eni, oil programme QA lead at Trafigura, business systems analysis in metals trading at Koch, energy trading BA for gas and power, trading meteorologist at ExxonMobil, European energy shift trader at SSE, commodity and energy trading consultant at Baringa, and commodities product and transformation roles at JPMorganChase.

Generic ETRM knowledge becomes much stronger when combined with one or more desks: oil, gas, LNG, power, metals, refined products or environmental products.

13. Consulting demand remains strong

Consulting firms continue to recruit heavily, including Publicis Sapient, capSpire, Baringa, BBGC, Avanade, EPAM, Vallum Associates, Luxoft, Synechron and Actualize Consulting.

Consulting remains one of the best ways to accumulate multiple implementations, multiple commodities, multiple platforms, and architecture, transformation and senior stakeholder experience.

14. Product management is becoming part of trading technology

Product roles appear much more frequently: senior product manager at bp, digital markets commodities product manager at JPMorganChase, enterprise data product manager at Bloomberg, product manager for data at IG Group, senior product manager for credit trading lifecycle, technical product manager at OSTTRA and product solutions architect at SimCorp.

This signals a career path from business analyst to product owner, product manager and trading technology product lead - a realistic alternative to traditional architecture or consulting progression.

15. Data product thinking is entering trading

The term data product appears repeatedly across lead data products engineer, enterprise data product, risk and performance ready data, enterprise OT asset data products and data product manager roles.

Instead of building one central warehouse, organisations increasingly treat trades, positions, market data, P&L, risk and settlements as governed domain data products. A modern trading data product needs clear ownership, a defined schema, lineage, quality controls, service-level expectations, historical reproducibility and distribution through APIs.

16. Trading technology is becoming more techno-functional

The market increasingly rewards people who operate across layers. The strongest profile is no longer simply knowing one platform. It is understanding the commodity, the trade lifecycle, ETRM, data, APIs and integrations, cloud and event architecture - and being able to communicate with traders, risk and technology alike.

17. The UK market now shows multiple entry routes

There is no longer a single ETRM entry point. Seven routes are visible in the data:

18. A graduate route is also visible

A notable listing is the Commodities Trading Rotational Analyst Graduate Programme for a 2027 start at Castleton Commodities International. The market is creating entry points before professionals specialise in ETRM: a graduate can begin in trading, operations, analytics or data, and later move toward ETRM, risk, trading technology or architecture.

Final market assessment

The traditional core remains strong: Endur, ETRM business analysis, functional consulting and architecture. But the growth frontier is increasingly visible in data engineering, market data, event-driven architecture, cloud, data products, front-office engineering, integration, analytics and product management.

The most important career conclusion is that ETRM expertise is becoming more valuable when combined with modern technology capability, not less. The ETRM professional of the next few years is unlikely to work only inside one monolithic application. They will increasingly operate across the full chain: trade, event, data, position, valuation, P&L, risk, settlement and analytics.
